Polygamy strongly protested | Family members oppose bail plea of accused from police custody

YUPIA, Apr 04: Expressing strong resentment against bail plea filed by the alleged accused Tok Tama, family members of late Techi Neme Tok staged protest outside district and session court premises here on Thursday.

In connection with abetting the suicide case, Nirjuli Police u/s 306 IPC on March 22 had arrested Tama, who is still under police custody.

The family members holding placards and shouting slogans that ‘without justice there can be no peace’, demanded capital punishment for the accused.

The accused should not be granted bail at any cost, brother of deceased Techi Pekhi Tara, said adding that the family members would not sit in peace until justice is ensured.

“We brought up her with utmost care and love till she tied the knot with Tama,” said Pekhi and questioned: Can Tama imagine the sufferings of her mother and family members and restore peace in the family?

They urged the investigation officer (IO) of the case to file a strong charge sheet against the accused and said that if the court by any chance grant bail the IO would be held responsible.

Welcoming the court’s decision to postpone scheduled hearing of bail petition to April 9 next, they said, “We believe in judicial system and wait for final verdict of the court,” they said, and claimed that if the court fails to give  justice to the departed soul, they would opt for traditional way of seeking justice.

Sister Techi Jerya called upon state women folk to raise voice against the polygamy system.“Today my sister was victim of polygamy, tomorrow it could be your sister and daughter,” Jerya said and asserted that practices of polygamy and child marriage should be totally banned in the state.

Who would love to live a stressful life due to multiple spouses in present modern time, she wondered and advocated total eradication of such inhuman practices.
